My family has called this place home for generations.
It's where I was raised, where I've chosen to build my life, and where I'm dedicated to making a difference.
That’s why I'm running for Haywood County Commissioner.
Haywood County is my home. I’m a fifth generation to Haywood County. I went to school here, My granddaddy was the first black business owner in Haywood County and my mama worked dispatch in the bottom of the old courthouse. My family retired from the mill, holding down that number 19 machine for a long time.
From Passion to Action: I know most of you from my time at the Pigeon Community Multicultural Development Center (PCMDC). My time with PCMDC has given me the chance to serve the folks of Haywood County with quality childcare programming, food services, and community building. I am honored to have been a part of the center’s storytelling of local Black history here in the Pigeon community and Haywood County. I look forward to bringing this leadership and experience to the Haywood County Board of Directors.
Why You're Running: After I moved away for college and completed my degree, I struggled to find a way to return to my home county. It took six years and a network of community to help me come back to Haywood County after college because moving back to my hometown was simply wasn’t something I could afford on an educator’s salary. In addition to my own struggles, my work with the Pigeon Center has shown me the many ways that folks in our community are struggling, from affording necessities like childcare, housing, and food to finding jobs that can pay the bills. I’m running because I believe there are better options out there to take care of everyone in Haywood County and I plan to use my time and resources to make that happen.
